What affects the cost of a tile floor

• Square footage of the room
• Removing the old floor, whether carpet, vinyl, wood or old tile
• Subfloor repair and leveling. Large tile in particular needs a very flat floor.
• Tile size and type. Large-format and natural stone take more labor; small mosaics take more cutting.
• Pattern. Herringbone and diagonal layouts mean more cuts than a straight lay.
• Transitions to other flooring, thresholds and baseboards

• How much wall area is being tiled, and whether it runs full height
• The tile: glass, zellige and natural stone cost more than ceramic subway
