Herringbone Backsplash with a Hand-Painted Medallion in Calhoun, GA

In this Calhoun kitchen we installed a herringbone backsplash across every wall and framed a hand-painted blue and white tile medallion behind the range as the centerpiece.

What We Built

• A herringbone backsplash in a soft white tile running along every counter wall
• A hand-painted blue and white tile medallion behind the range, framed with a dark blue border
• Herringbone carried up to the underside of the cabinets and around the window over the sink
• Clean cuts around outlets and switches so the pattern stays unbroken

Herringbone takes planning

Herringbone has far more cuts than straight subway tile, and the zigzag shows every mistake. The layout has to start from the center of the main wall so the pattern lines up behind the range and meets the corners evenly.

Setting a medallion

A framed medallion has to sit dead center behind the range and level with the hood. The herringbone around it is cut to meet the frame on every side, so it looks built in rather than stuck on.

Light colors, big impact

The soft white herringbone keeps the kitchen bright under the cabinet lighting and lets the blue medallion be the one bold piece in the room.
